It would've been nicer to have been heard a few years earlier. But it's still good news. Should at least allow me to finish my thesis with scraps of remaining sanity.

@ponce: D2 features in D1? This really isn't what's needed right now. D2 is going to take at least 2 years to get anywhere near usable at this rate. Backporting features into D1 would've only broken it more. The primary goal of a hypothetical fork would be cleanup, not featuritis. If it's not going to happen, then I'm counting on BitC, ooc, Rust, Clay and XL.

There is no need for a fork.

I think what D needs is a transition path from D1 to D2, with back-porting features from D2 to D1. This would maybe prevent the community to split, and allow Tango to switch.

Wouldn't we accept D1 to change to allow that, like it used to change ? A lot of D2 features would not badly interact (http://www.digitalmars.com/d/2.0/features2.html), the tricky part is const/immutable/shared imho.

Your post mirrors most of my concerns. In addition to the standard library problems (although to be fair, phobos is headed in the right direction in my opinion), the language redesign D2 is going through is symptomatic of an identity crisis: I like the fact that despite supporting garbage collection among many other things, D still was a systems language, but right now, it seems like it is going to try to be more like Java/C#. I hope Walter eventually sees this and brings it back to the right direction too, because I would hate having to give up on D2 after it brought so many interesting new features to D1.

I often think the same, the only thing that can make D a good language is a fork (by reasonable people).
